The waters
Kranj is the most centrally located town for fishing Slovenia, so every river is within reach — from the freestone Soča and Sava with their tributaries, to the gin-clear chalk streams of the Krka and Unica. Few places in the world offer such a diversity of rivers and species in so small an area.
Seasons & species
From March to November we fish for trout — marble, brown, rainbow and brook — and grayling, across both freestone rivers and spring creeks. The chalk streams fish best in May and June; the freestone rivers in April and July through October.

Good to know
Slovenia offers a rich mix of salmonids: marble trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout, grayling, and the Hucho — the Danube salmon. From Kranj, all of these are within reach on the Soča, Sava, Krka and Unica and their tributaries.
The marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) is the famous "ghost of the Soča" — a large, beautifully marbled trout native to the Soča basin and found almost nowhere else in the world. It is the signature catch of Slovenian fly fishing and is strictly protected, so it is fished catch-and-release.
Trout and grayling are fished from March to November. The chalk streams fish best in May and June, and the freestone rivers in April and from July to October. The Hucho season runs from October to mid-February.

The Hucho (Hucho hucho), also called Huchen or Danube salmon, is the largest of the salmonids and the apex predator of these rivers — and the namesake of Hucho House. We fly-fish and spin-fish for it from October to mid-February, with the best days led by daily conditions and the moon cycle.

Many Slovenian beats are fly-only, with barbless hooks and catch-and-release, and the marble trout is always released. Exact rules vary by river and beat, and your guide follows and explains them on the day.
